the command of the Lord,

"Lord, is that true?"

"What."

"You know; this part
about only being successful
if we're in Your will."

[SILENCE.]

"Cuz' if that's true.....
going over my 51
years - that means, that
like, I've only been in Your will
about........ TWICE?"

"What have I told you, child?"

"Oh. You mean that part
about Your thoughts.
Here it is:

For My thoughts
are not your thoughts.
Neither are your ways
My ways,
says the Lord.
[Isaiah 55:8]

You're ALWAYS telling
me that, Lord."

[NOD.]
"Why, child."

"'Cuz."

[PATIENT NOD.]
"Go on."

(shrug)
"I don'no."

[SILENCE.]

"You mean, like,
OUR idea of success.....
isn't what, like,
YOU think it is?"

[NOD.]

"Yeah, but,
I've NEVER been
successful.
in ANYTHING, LORD!"

[PATIENT SILENCE.]

"Well.....a tiny tidbit,
here and there,
a smidge,
a dot,
a dimple,
-along the way -
but, nothin' like my brother
and sister -
certainly, nothin'
to write home about."

[SMILE.]
"Which Home, child?"

(smile)
"Thank You, Lord.
(long silence)
So....maybe,
maybe, the most
successful moment
in my 51 years
was....."

"Yes, child?"

".....when I looked
up, and began talking
to You, again."

[SILENCE.]
"How much do I love you, child?"

(arms wide)
"This big?"

[NOD.]

....because you have turned
back from following the Lord,
the Lord will not be with you.
But they (children of Israel)
presumed to go up to the heights
of the hill country,
although neither the ark of the
covenant of the Lord,
nor Moses, departed out the camp.
Then the Amalekites and the
Canaanites .....came down,
and defeated them.......
[Numbers 14:43-45]
