The Greatest Gift Ever Given

On Thanksgiving morning, Jack Thompson and his family scurried around the house as they prepared to receive family members and friends later that afternoon. Foods of many varieties were being prepared from desserts from Mexico, to meats from Italy and Germany, and salads from Sweden and France. As the family took a little break from all of their hard work, the children found on their lunch plates, colorfully wrapped packages. Without hesitation, the children eagerly opened the gifts. Carla, the youngest child, said, “Say dad how come we’re getting gifts on Thanksgiving. You’re not supposed to give gifts on Thanksgiving! Gifts are supposed to be given on Christmas Day! Does this mean we’re not gonna get any Christmas gifts, dad!”

“Are you sure about that, my daughter? And you’re going to get gifts on Christmas. Don’t even concern yourself about that!” said responded.

Jack’s daughter did not seem to know what her father meant with his unusual gifts and response to his child’s question and inquiry. She just knew that when her father gave her gifts at the various times of the years—her birthday, when he came home from Annual Military Training, and at Christmas—he did so to let her know that he was thinking about her and that he loved her.

Later in the week while she had time to think about the strange act of her father in church, it came to her—that God, the Father gave all humanity the greatest and best gift of all time—His Son. It was God’s way of letting humankind know that He is thinking of every person and that He loves each and every person without conditions.

You too can start a Thanksgiving tradition that demonstrates the Father unconditional love for His children as well not at this blessed time of the year but all year round.
