Women
WHO ARE THESE WOMEN?
Not much is known about them
Not too many sermons have been preached about them
Few verses in scriptures were written about them
But their courage and faith is unmatched by the greatest
of warriors
Their passion preserved generations
They are the unsung heroes of our faith.
They dared the devil and refused to equate
womanhood with weakness.
Who are these women?
We may never know their names
Like the woman in 2 Samuel 20:15 – 22.
Her name is not mentioned but she is described as a “wise woman”.
She dwelled in a city called Ahel. A city under siege by the armies of Israel, which was under the command of the brutal General Joab.
As the entire city stood and watched in fear she called out to Joab (unafraid of his reputation),” I am among the peaceful and faithful in Israel. You seek to destroy a city and a mother in Israel. Why would you swallow up the Inheritance of the Lord?”
In the eyes of men a regular everyday woman. A wife and mother. But she was also a woman who was found faithful. A woman who had the courage to face the enemy that threatened the safety of her family and city. A woman of influence. She is not afraid to challenge the devil, demons, drugs, culture or perversion that attempts to lay siege on her home and city.
They never gave up on what it was God had entrusted into their hands.
Women like Rizpah who protected the dead bodies of the sons of Saul from the birds of the air and the beasts of the field by night.
They were dead but she held on and protected her boys. Days went by, then the months and seasons.
She was exposed to the harsh elements of the night. She kept on holding on until the day the King heard of her determination, and demanded that the bodies be given a proper burial. She held on in hope and the beauty of it all is the fact that “hope does not disappoint” Romans 5:5a. Keep hope alive. Your sons may be dead in sin; your husband may be dead in sin; but the King has seen the hope in your heart.
Your dream may seem so far away. Keep on keeping on.
Don’t stop guarding the word He gave to your heart.
Women who were imperfect.
Women like Rahab the prostitute. She believed the word of God and faith in the word was all it took to stir her heart up to move out of her limitations.
Rahab found the door open for her to walk into the exquisite hall of faith. Her picture hangs there for all to see.
Saul the first King of Israel, a mighty warrior would find no room there. The doors were shut to Israel’s first High Priest Aaron. Solomon in all his wisdom was not found worthy. But God had room for this prostitute, who was washed by the blood and turned into a woman of faith. She stands shoulder to shoulder with kings, prophets and warriors, symbolic of the pride of womanhood.
Do you remember Mary Magdalene whom the Lord casted seven demons out of? She came from a city called Magdalene, famous for its prostitutes. Born and bred in sin but who loved the lord more than her? When the macho like Peter denied our Lord, who was there for Him? When he resurrected whom did he first appear to?
Luke 7:36 – 50 tells us of another woman.
The entire city knew she was a sinful lady. But on a day when no one had the courtesy to wash the master’s feet with water, she did it with her tears. Such love, such passion for our Master.
In life they sacrificed all they had even their safety and security for the will of God.
2 kings 11:1 writes about Jehosheba who hid the rightful heir to the throne of Judah from the woman who ascended to the throne and sought to kill the lad. She hid him for six years “in a closet”. Isn’t it wonderful to realize that God honors what is done in the closet?
Their kind deeds and acts of care, courage and faith lives on after them. For even in death, the brethren with tears in their eyes and hearts showed the Apostle Peter what Dorcas had made for them. As he looked at the testament to her virtue, he cried to God to bring her back to life.
Women of faith
Women of courage
Women of vision and determination
Women of purpose
They are the silent heroes of our faith.
We pass by them everyday.
God bless them all.
