So when I was a kid I never understood what in the world Maundy Thursday meant. In fact I always thought people were saying “Monday Thursday”. I hate mondays (that’s probably why I take them off at work) and the thought of celebrating a monday on a thursday (which is a pretty cool day) was pretty horrible! Boy was I wrong!

The word “Maundy” is actually a latin word! You know the language they speak in the country of Latinva. Not really! Latin is the ancient language spoken in Rome and at that time in history Rome pretty much ran the entire world. So if you were educated you spoke the educated language of latin.

Anyway... back on topic. “Maundy” is actually the latin word for command. So what does “Command Thursday” have to do with us? Well I’m glad you asked! Check this out!

John 15:12 records what Jesus said on “Command Thursday”: I command you to love each other in the same way that I love you.

In order to understand this we need to head back to elementary school and have a little review on opposites! Now hang with me cause I know this is tough (intense sarcasm)!

What is the opposite of tall? ______________
For those comedians out there that inserted my name in the line above, Ha Ha!
The answer is: SHORT

What is the opposite of old? _______________
The answer is YOUNG

One more to keep our brain rolling!

What is the opposite of hard? __________________
The answer is SOFT

Now for the point of this entire blog!

What is the opposite of suggestion?
And the answer is COMMAND!

So lets narrow it down to the main point.

Jesus was put on the cross to die for our sins on Friday. The day before (Thursday) was the last opportunity He would have to share with His disciples the most important stuff, to remind them again of the main points He had been teaching for the last three years, to help them understand what was going to happen on Friday.

He left them with this important command: “love each other in the same way that I love you.” Not a suggestion! In fact the complete opposite of a suggestion! Love each other no matter what. Despite the ugliness you witness in them, despite the hurtful words you may receive from them, despite the lack of caring or backstopping or gossiping or arrogance or anything else. LOVE EACH OTHER!

How long and how far? To the point of death. Thats how much Jesus loved us. That’s the way Jesus loved us. He died for us are we willing to die for each other?
