Christian Living
My family just returned from Germany where we had the chance to meet my Father. It was a wonderful week of fellowship. We shared so much and it felt like we had known each other our whole lives. The one thing that struck me was what not only I, but the rest of our family missed out on all because I waited so long to find and meet Dad.
Yes, I knew I was adopted and there was always a desire, a curiosity to meet him. I had known where my father was for at least 12 years. Family members discouraged me. “Leave well enough alone, you don’t need him to be happy.” “You have a good life. Why open yourself up to disappointment,” they had said.
He might not like you because you are American, he is probably too busy with his own family. On and on the comments went, planting doubt and a reluctance to follow through.
One day at church, I was talking with a lady who shared her story about finding her Dad. Her family had also been less than enthusiastic about her search and she understood the doubts I had. She urged me to take the risk and to find Dad. A small, still voice inside convicted me that it was time to send that letter out.
Over the internet,
I slowly translated a short but life changing letter. If you don’t want any contact, then you have nothing but my best wishes and thanks for letting me come to America. Didn’t want to make him feel bad about not wanting to write back. But why did I assume that he might want to reject me?
Didn’t have long to wait. It was only three weeks after sending the letter off, I received a letter back from Germany Dad wrote, “If you could have imagined the biggest surprise, it would not even come close to my delight at having received your letter. Let me ask you this one simple question, he asked. Why did you wait so long to contact me?
Isn’t that what our Heavenly Father might ask us? “Why did you wait so long to find me?” “Don’t you know that I’ve missed the years we could have had together?” “I thought about you often over the years and how much I loved you.” “It’s made so happy that you have called out my name, decided to meet me and that you now call me Father.” And I sit there almost ashamed that I had waited.
If your Father is calling out your name, please respond. He wants to love you, bless you and wants you to be His child. Don’t miss out on your Father’s unconditional love.
Dad doesn’t care that I am older, that I dress like an American or that I struggle with my not so perfect German. Dad is just thankful that he can call me his daughter and that I call him Dad. I mourn the years that were wasted, but have great joy in the time we have left together.
