Larry Lilly's Letter Monday 23, 2007
My friend of near 40 years, Dr. David Halcomb, gifted pastor and currently serving as Vice President of Heritage Baptist College spoke to the gathered saints at Berean on Sunday past, and I was blessed by his message, not only the powerful content, but also the passion with which he preached. As they say in the country churches, "A good time was had by all."
The good Dr.'s title was, "The Grey Haired Conqueror" based on the accomplishments of Caleb, the companion of Joshua and Moses. Caleb in the context was now a grey haired man, yet unlike many who enjoy the blessing of growing to the position of elder statesmen, he still had the fire. Four words defined the life span of Caleb and they are four words that should be a part of the life of every person who professes to be a believer in Jesus Christ.
That Caleb was committed to the Lord and his ways is without controversy. As a pastor and observer of life, I find the principle of commitment to Christ, to His cause, is the missing element in far too many lives. Thus, we have the half hearted nation that once threatened to rival the Golden Age of Pericles in wealth and values. To say that we Christians are to blame for our current failure is to understate the obvious. The little girl I married 43 years ago just returned from a ladies trip to Chicago for a conference to listen to other ladies who do not obey their husbands either, unless of course said husband gives a command to shop until you drop.
In fairness, honesty and the hope of living after the Great Blonde reads this, I have to admit that I do not know for sure whether or not Joyce would obey my command as I have never given one. She loves Jesus and as best she can follows his way, that's good enough for me. I know, I'm a coward, but it is well established in several personal relationship disciplines that this trait is essential for long marriages. I do know that over the years she has demonstrated her commitment to our Lord and our life together.
Joyce told me that the registration clerk where the ladies stayed warned them, "Do not walk in this part of town." I don't know if he meant it was dangerous or if he was concerned about the Cabbies making a living. Knowing the girls Joyce was with, I sure hope the Cabbies did not depend on tips.
The phrase used in the Bible to define Caleb's life is, "He wholly followed the Lord."
No halfhearted lollygagging with Caleb, but whole hearted, true hearted he marched along the path of the Lord's will concerning Caleb.
Caleb knew something that I always must remind self of, God is bigger than the giants that step in our way trying to prevent us from entering the Lord's best for our life.
