REMEMBER ME

It was Sunday morning - I fixed my hair and covered myself with jewels
I put on my finest garments and painted my nails – looking good for church is the rule
I took one last glance in the mirror and almost forgot the biggest adornment needed
a smile so wide and fake and by my reflection I had succeeded
I greeted each person with hugs and hallelujahs and quoted scripture here and there
And people marveled at my ability to remember and praised my willingness to share
But, when I sat alone that night with no others that could see
I heard your voice so clear and loud say, “Child, remember Me.”
I joined a committee and tithed 10 percent more
I cleaned the church sanctuary and even scrubbed the church’s floor
I bought a Christian CD and held a two-hour prayer meeting
I gave to the poor and supplied everything they were needing
But, when I sat alone that night with no others that could see
I heard your voice so clear and loud say, “Child, remember Me.”
I watched everything I said and read the bible more and once again I found myself scrubbing the church floor!
I raised my hands so everyone could see my devotion to the Lord and I religiously referred to my bible as “my double-edged sword”
I volunteered for children’s church and encouraged the depressed
And when I read my poetry I knew everyone would be blessed!
But, when I sat alone that night with no others that could see
I heard your voice so clear and loud say, “Child, remember Me.”

“Do not adorn yourself with outward works that quickly fade away.”
“Do not beat yourself into submission and force yourself to pray”
“Do not rob your time with me and do not fail to see – that what I most desire is intimacy with Me."
