As we look at the events encircling us, this is the time for Christians to be like the rodeo rider—and hold on to the saddle.
Ungodliness is evident everywhere. God’s laws are unimportant to many. This is a world of Adam marrying Steve, and Lisa/Louise—in many places sanctioned by the state. We now have unrepentant homosexual bishops foolishly voted into office by those who call themselves Christians. It prompts consternation and dismay from those who know the Word.
This is an era of de facto marriages—complete with children— and it’s normal as apple pie to non-believers. Thousands flock to annual parades in big cities put on by sexual deviants.
The world is rapidly sinking into the kind of moral mud that existed in Sodom and Gomorrah. It resulted in their destruction, and later the great flood. We should not be surprised at today’s happenings— because the Bible predicts it. Here’s a forecast from two thousand years ago in 2 Timothy 3:1-5:
1 But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come:
2 For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy,
3 unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self control, brutal, despisers of good,
4 traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God,
5 having a form of godliness, but denying its power. And from such people turn away!
An accurate description of our world today. Those “last days” are surely here. This is a time when some will give up. Jesus says in Luke 8:13 “…and these have no root, who believe for a while and in time of temptation fall away.”
Take heart! In spite of all this, God tells us to be overcomers like Noah, and Lot and his family. “But hold fast what you have till I come.” (Revelation 2:25) It might appear that satan is winning, but the final whistle hasn’t yet sounded. Anyone who has read Revelation knows the end result. Remember—God never loses.
It seems Jesus’ return will be soon, though the Bible says no-one will know the day. The Lord wants us not only to hold on, but to be steadfast. “Therefore my beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.” (1 Corinthians 15:58) Again: “For we have become partakers of Christ if we hold the beginning of our confidence steadfast to the end.” (Hebrews 3:14)
The true believers are fewer, but those who overcome will eat the heavenly fruit, and walk the streets of gold. (Revelation 21:21) It is now we must grip the earthly saddle a little tighter, and let the vision of heaven never depart from our imagination.
One Peter 1:7 says: “that the genuineness of your faith, being much more precious than gold that perishes, though it be tested by fire, may be found to praise, honor, and glory at the revelation of Jesus Christ.”
We must ask God for an extra helping of persistence, determination, and courage. Above all, ask Him to give us the desire to reach out to those who are heading for an eternity separated from God.
