Growth and change are exciting but, let’s face it, construction zones can be messy. There are detours to contend with, heavy equipment trucks that slow down traffic, roads that resemble obstacle courses, scaffolding to maneuver around . . .
But in order for growth and change to take place, construction is necessary. In the midst of the surface chaos, underlying organization does exist. Before any construction is attempted, blueprints are drawn up that diagram not only what the end result should look like but each phase along the way.
In addition, numerous tools are invaluable to the building process. A tape measure guarantees that all materials are correctly sized to fit. A saw cuts the materials to the measured sizes, and a sander smoothes off the rough edges. A wheelbarrow hauls off dirt and debris from the construction site. A ladder may be needed at times in order to reach high places. A level ensures that the structure is on even footing. And paint, brushes, rollers, etc., finish it off by adding color to the completed project.
God works to remodel us into His likeness using methods similar to those described above.
“And we… are being transformed into His likeness with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit” (2 Cor. 3:18, NIV).
He has provided a set of 66 blueprints, and His Word acts as a tape measure to show us the standard by which we are to gauge our lives. Sometimes He finds it necessary to shape us, smooth off some rough edges, remove debris and rubble from our hearts, and help us find solid, level ground. He calls us to meet Him in the high places of His presence, and throughout the entire process His masterful touch is adding beautiful colors to our lives. It is a dynamic, never-ending process.
Is your heart a construction zone? If not, I invite you to pull out the “blueprints,” study them prayerfully, and let God transform you into what He wants you to be.
