When I was a child, I delighted in going outside into our front yard and spinning around and around until I was so dizzy that I would fall down. As I spun, my arms would be spread wide open, as if to surrender my entire being to the soft summer breeze and bright California sunshine. I would spin in reckless abandon, knowing that the lush grass would break my fall and I would be unharmed. Then I would simply lie there, soaking up the sun, until I felt rejuvenated once again.

God wants us to open our hearts to Him, spread wide our arms to embrace Him, and completely surrender all that we are to Him. To surrender is to yield, to give up oneself completely. Abandon takes it one step further by giving oneself over unrestrainedly. God longs for us to trust Him with every part of our being so that we can yield to Him unrestrainedly. Our focus is then on Him and not on ourselves. Once we have reached that yielded place, we become open and empty to be filled and then used by Him.

Just like the soft grass, as we fall into His arms and surrender to His Spirit, He is there to catch us and hold us in His gentle hands—unharmed, sometimes breathless in awe and wonder. If you cannot visualize what I am talking about, take a moment to go outside right now, spread your arms wide open and spin around, giving yourself wholly to the experience. Then as you fall to the ground, remember that God wants you to fall into His arms, breathless and totally yielded, not standing on your own strength but relying upon His.

Once you reach this point of total surrender, He will then be able to use you for His divine purpose and through His divine power.
