When you give a thousand dollars of your million, it probably isn't really a gift. More than likely, it is an unconscious attempt to buy fire insurance. Real gifts cost the giver.

When Araunah the Jebusite offered King David his threshing floor to build an altar to the Lord, David declined, saying, "No, but I will surely buy it from you for a price; nor will I offer burnt offerings to the Lord my God with that which costs me nothing." II Sam. 24:24

"And Jesus saw the rich putting their gifts into the treasury, and He saw also a certain poor widow putting in two mites. So He said, 'Truly I say to you that this poor widow has put in more than all; for all of these out of their abundance have put in offerings for God; but she out of her poverty put in all the livelihood that she had.'" Luke 21:1-4

"Give, and it will be given to you; good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over will be put into your bosom. For with the same measure you use, it will be measured back to you." Luke 6:38

It would seem that the gift that is blessed comes from a generous, trusting heart, and the amount is not part of the equation. After all, God doesn't need anything from us. His is the world and all that's in it. It is for our own souls' sake that we are admonished to freely give since we have freely received. Gifts that count cost the giver.
