I once heard that love comes softly.
But other than the love of God,
it has seldom come softly to me.
But I’m learning.
I’m learning to love without expectations,
to give my heart freely.
I have held you loosely in my arms,
afraid I’d crush you with my embrace.
I just love you so very much,
it hurts sometimes.
I don’t know why God chose my heart
to be so very over-full with love.
But it is full. And a big part of it is yours.
It overflows with overwhelming love.
It spills out all over the place
and not everyone wants to be bathed in the spill.
I hope that you know
you are more precious to me
than I could dare ever try to explain.
I hold you close with my heart every day.
I will hold you with it always,
even if and when you can’t return the embrace.
Someday, when your heart is overwhelmed
with the love you have for another,
perhaps you’ll know then
how it is to love you with a heart like mine.
I hold you loosely, daily,
my children, my grandchildren, my friends.
I’m truly afraid I will crush you
with more than this loose embrace.
And to crush you is something
I don’t think my tender heart could stand.
Please receive my gentle embrace.
You don’t have to open your arms to me.
I understand that not everyone feels
love so deeply in their hearts the way I do.
My love for you, for each one of you,
is so strong and I've learned that
I mustn’t expect it to be returned in full.
But I pray that it will nourish you.
My heart aches with a rare love
that I’m unsure can ever be returned,
except that I know Love
whose love is truer than even my own.
With more love than can be measured,
(doing my best to hold it in check)
I hold you loosely today.
I pray it is enough to keep you
and not so much that it drives you away.
With the silk pillow that is my heart,
I pray you'll always find it
a comforting place to lay your head
and that my love,
though so strong,
will always
come to you softly.
