Larry Lilly's Letter Wednesday July 11, 2007

Have you ever had an "attitude?" I mean a super duper bad attitude about life in general or even your responsibility to God? I know I have and this troubles me for I know better. Over the now long span of my life I have not been "tricked" into very many sins. I simply dove in. I suppose it’s the old Adamic nature rising up.

Mike Pyatt wrote and told me about his experience along this line and he used a graphic phrase that really caught my attention as it hit the nail on the head in my own case. Mike identified a period in his life as being marked by a state of mind he describes thusly:

"My cavalier attitude about sin has caused me great anguish and pain."

The moment I glanced at the word "cavalier" I knew I was on a trip to Online Webster for I vaguely recalled the word as many faceted. Here is what Mike meant by his use of cavalier:

Function: adjective 1 : insouciant and debonair 2 : marked by lofty disregard of others' interests, rights, or feelings : highhanded and arrogant or supercilious : given to airy dismissal of things worthy of attention, cavalier in his methods, too lordly over appointments and forgotten promises -- F.Tennyson Jesse

I wish I could say Webster describes Mike to a T, but while this is true is also fits Ole Larry like a tailor made suit.

Being the type of preacher given to rants, I will leave the first part of the second part alone for if I deal with this and fib a little you may talk to the Great Blonde and "Liar" would be added to the list. Also, I feel certain that you, my dear reader would never be accused of being "marked by a lofty disregard of others," and certainly no one would accuse you of being "highhanded and arrogant." No, not to your face.

But what about "given to airy dismissal of things worthy of attention?"

I asked myself if I airily dismiss important biblical practices without much thought? According to Jesus to pray without thought is sin, I refer to vain repetition. Do I fail to honor the Lord with the first fruits of His blessing on my life with little or no thought? What if I honor Him, without thought, just write the check with a robotic attitude and drop it in the plate. Do I seriously pursue a fellowship with Christ or do I treat time with Christ in an offhanded manner, like, "Hey, Jesus, how ya doing today? See ya."

I am thinking of founding a group called, "Cavalier Christians For Jesus." This should get a crowd. I will probably be president.
