Larry Lilly's Letter Monday July 9, 2007

It's good to back in front of the blank screen after a week of traveling to see my mother who is 93 years of age and beginning to show some signs of ravages of time on the earth. Seeing her was a shock. Oh, she looks fine and is perfectly capable of conversation and even a rant or two. The shock is that it took her forty five minutes to fully grasp who I am. Her memory has always been razor sharp and I admit this took me back a step and I have not fully recovered my balance. In many ways mom has been a heroine to our family as we stop and think about the almost impossible odds of her living beyond the toddler stage. To see her frailty of mind is painful. She did wield her super duper electric scooter as a throne, so not all is lost. I do appreciate your prayers for her as she lives the days of her life separated by a thousand miles from my younger sister Bertie who was always her favorite. If mom only knew.

On another note, upon arrival back in the Haute, I received a note from my friend of many years, whom I had lost contact with, Mike Pyatt. Mike is now in Wyoming and doing well and asked to put on the list to receive this letter, the monthly snail mail Larry Lilly's Journal and other literature. His life will be even richer when he begins receiving the mail.

Mike sent a few quotes to me and I want to comment on one in today's offering that really puts our predicament into perspective concerning the besetting sins we find sneaking up on us on a daily basis and also a few that we find ourselves whistling to and saying, "Hey, I'm right over here."

Mike said, "Francis Schaeffer referred to those things that beset us, not directly of our own sin, and he called it 'The sludge of the fall.'"

Recognizing the truth of many who refer to me as an "ignoramus" I went ahead and checked Webster's online and found a meaning for sludge: "a muddy or slushy mass, deposit, or sediment: as a : the precipitated solid matter produced by water and sewage treatment processes."

Dr. Schaeffer could say the grossest things in the nicest way. I will not give the way I would have stated this sludge that so easily besets us. Perhaps the good Dr. was practicing the biblical method of letting our speech be season with salt thereby making it more attractive.

Why the rambling? Probably due to the fact that I am so tired from the resting of last week.

The point or points of today's offering is simple, our loved ones are growing old, the time we have to do right by them is swiftly passing and we (I) need to get with it. And furthermore good friends can and want to make a contribution to our life as did Mike. Today I assert that I will invest time in my loves and friendships and contribute and receive in these relationships. Hey, it's worth it to everyone.
