Poetry
In backrooms and bathrooms
devout ones gather ‘round,
to bow before the rock-filled pipes
that light their souls on fire.
Inhaling deeply demon breath,
heads raise in ecstasy,
and exhale smoke into the air,
their incense offering.
Eager ones with greedy eyes
covet this sacrifice,
surrendering their soul and mind,
their families and their lives.

I really love the "twistedness" of your poem. There are strong echoes of worship and offerings - and yet it is all so counterfeit!
It is so, so very comforting to know that God's mercy extends far enough to reach the darkest, deepest places and rescue our souls. It's a sad place to be... in "backrooms and bathrooms"... but nobody knows that better than one who's been snatched out of such things. Thought provoking, to say the least.
A striking image. I'd like to see you contrast it with the gathering of believers who worship God and preserve their lives.
Crista, you never disappoint with your word pictures. :) I do like Debbie's idea of the contrast but even without that it shows the fruitlessness of placing our faith and hope in the wrong places. Well done as always.
