The Price

In a far away land with strange customs and ways
An American soldier stands,
And the ache in his heart and the longing of mind
Is far from the desert sands.

Life is in earnest a far different way,
Than it’s ever been before.
Small things are dearer than any other day,
Like a voice on a distant shore.

...She’d like to recall the miles in between,
Before the uniform came;
But she’s made her pledge and her word is good,
No matter what - she’ll keep it the same.

Now there are boundaries set on a life,
When the impulses scream out to “fly”
Now with the fear factor running so high.
Something commands them to “stay”.

Remembering loved ones, and colors so bright ~
The eagle’s effortless glide;
Remembering the view of the torch held high ~
There is something worth living to die....

Remembering the words that they’ve always heard
That “freedom” is never for free ~
They go to their post and they give it their best ~
For freedom, for you, and for me!
