Larry Lilly's Letter Wednesday June 20, 2007

I never know just what the mail will hold. Thankfully it often holds a few checks and most always holds a few lines that bring laughter or even a tear of compassion. Roger, from Parchman, Mississippi sent a note to me and I just opened it as I was sitting and staring at a blank screen that seemed to be begging for some black marks resembling understandable communication. When a writer's screen remains blank you must understand the terrible feelings of failure, inadequacy and near lunacy that attack said writer in the deepest wells of his/her being. I referred to this feeling one time as a Hiroshima of the soul.

Well, Roger, on Death Row wrote:

"Greetings with thankfulness for your Journal letter Volume 9 issue 6, 2007. I received it from a volunteer chaplain; it was such a blessing to me, very uplifting. I am on dead row and it's hard and difficult to receive good Christian fellowship in here! Only once a month does the volunteer chaplain come. I'm writing to find out if I could maybe be put on your mailing list to receive the Journal too? I do know Jesus Spirit is the best fellowship, but I also know Christian material is a great help."

Of course I entered Roger on the list and he will receive the monthly Larry Lilly's Journal free as do all who ask for it. The last verse of a poem sent by Roger states:

"What need to worry then, or fret?
The God who gave His Son
Holds all my moments in His hand
And gives them one by one."

It's strange to receive a poem from Death Row that espouses the truth of God's word that we must learn to trust the Lord for each day and for the necessary things of each day. A writer of a long past era, Dale Carnegie, called this process, "living in day tight compartments." Jesus expressed as "sufficient for the day is the evil thereof."

How many of us waste too much of our precious gift of life worrying about tomorrow? How mush joy is missed because of what might happen? If you were to take away the "what ifs," you would be amazed at how much energy you would have left for living a worry free life.

I was definitely moved by Roger's statement, "I do know Jesus Spirit is the best fellowship," and I hope that my readers along with me will learn the value of hanging out with Jesus.
