My Daddy’s Eyes
My Father passed away when he was only 45 years old of a massive heart attack. We didn’t know Daddy had a bad heart. His one and only heart attack took his life. That was in 1973 and he had been to have a physical only a couple weeks before. I think he knew something was wrong, but the doctor didn’t find the problem. Back then, they didn’t have all the technology that is available today to detect those things.
I still miss him, especially around Father’s Day.
I had just been married for about two months when Daddy passed away. I married young and took off with my new husband to Utah where he had secured a job as a pipe-fitter for a large oil company. I will never forget the afternoon of my wedding day. Daddy and I sat down to have a talk. He wanted to know if I was sure this is what I wanted to do. I wasn’t sure! I was scared to death. But, I was also too scared to back out - after all, it was my wedding day. (That marriage didn’t last). We talked a little while then Daddy told me he loved me and gave me the biggest bear hug ever. He hugged me so tight I almost couldn’t breathe. When he released me, he had tears in his hazel colored eyes.
That moment in time is forever etched into my memory. For it was the last time my Daddy held me in his arms. I can still feel that bear hug and I can still see his face and tearful eyes so clearly in my mind. I was his little girl again, right before I was to become a woman and all the love he had for me shone from his eyes. I know I will see my Daddy again, in heaven and sometimes I can hardly wait for that day.
Matthew 7:11 (KJV) says “If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him?” My Daddy gave me the most precious gift a parent can give a child; his undying love. His body physically died two months later but his love is still with me.
Think about how much more love our heavenly Father must have for us! If we could only see His eyes, I think we would see tears of sadness when we are hurting and tears of joy when we are joyful. How His eyes must have shone when we accepted His Son as our personal Savior! Psalm 34:15 says “The eyes of the LORD are upon the righteous, and his ears are open unto their cry.”
If you still have your Father with you, please honor him this Sunday and everyday! He may not have been the perfect Dad, but I guarantee that when he’s gone, you are going to miss him terribly. Tell him you love him - don’t wait until God takes him home and then regret not saying the things that are in your heart.
If you don’t have your Dad with you anymore and you miss him like I do, think about the agape love your Heavenly Father has for you. Praise Him for loving you so much that He sent His Son to die for you. Thank Him for His love. Tell Him you love Him and wish Him a Happy Father’s Day. His eyes are always looking down with joy on His children who glorify and praise Him. Make His eyes shine with love for His beautiful little child.
