Larry Lilly's Letter Thursday June 7, 2007

I received word just this week that the widow Mrs. Dennis is yet being treated shabbily to say the least. As I pondered her plight, which is brought about by "professing" Christian leaders, I wondered; "Larry, where do these men, most of whom have a track record of honor, get the idea that this outrage is permissible within the framework of biblical Christianity?" Their actions are more in line with those who say, "Well, abortion is legal, therefore it must be moral."

As I searched for some ideological foundation to justify this meanness, I at last found a good, solid and well worn counterpart to Jesus Christ and from this man's twisted and tormented mind spews the philosophical concepts to explain the actions against the widow Mrs. Dennis.

The man recently proclaimed as the most effective mass murderer in history, Mao Zedong, wrote:

"I do not agree with the view that to be moral, the motive of one's actions has to be benefiting others. Morality does not have to be defined in relation to others. … People like me want to … satisfy our hearts to the full, and in doing so we automatically have the most valuable moral codes. Of course there are people and objects in the world, but they are all there only for me. … People like me only have a duty to ourselves; we have no duty to other people."

In fairness, most people at some point in life, I am speaking of Christians, will line up more with an idea that is more expressive of Mao Zedong than Jesus Christ. It is the responsibility of others to rebuke the fellow Christian who finds themselves more clearly defined by Mao than by Jesus.

In my humble opinion the average American, Christian or Pagan, is more in line with Mao than Jesus. Face it, we are referred to as the "Me Generation" with ample evidence that this designation is correct.

Some years ago I read Michener's "Alaska" and discovered the practice of the Eskimo's who would take their elderly or infirm and simply place them on the ice with no food or implements of survival. On the ice the person who was "in the way" would perish and the Eskimo family would continue unencumbered by the needs of the helpless old man or woman.

Sounds and reads brutal to me. Of course it's brutal, but from where I sit it is in no way as heartrending as the treatment modern Christians perpetrate on other Christians, in the name of legalities, the power of trustees, or mere expediency. Again, please, refer to the well known biblical account of Jesus throwing a widow to the wolves, or to the ice. Mao Zedong? Perhaps. Jesus? No way.
