Larry Lilly's Letter Tuesday May 29, 2007

I was talking with a long time friend over the weekend and we happened to mention another mutual friend. Tragically, the friend has taken a fall. A fall, not in the old gangland style, but he fell into grievous sin, though I doubt that any sin fails to break the heart of the Lord. The rumors floated around for a spell that this man, pastor, founder of a seminary etc, had, in a time of pressure imbibed a little of the "elixir of the Gods." Well, truth has a way of wiggling out of even the best cover ups and the stumble was/is considered major by most people who profess to be not only Christians, but Biblicist in outlook. The dear brother was caught in a homosexual affair.

Can the above happen to a truly born again Christian? My answer is yes, it can and it does. While this variation of the sexual sins mentioned in the scripture is horrifying, it is no more horrifying for a Christian than the adultery and pre-martial relationships smiled upon by too large a faction of the professing church. The same root words control the whole kit and kaboddle. Kaboddle is a combination of Hebrew, Greek and Lillyisms.

Here is where the difference comes into play: Most men and women who profess faith and who fall/leap into an unscriptural sexual relationship of a heterosexual nature, upon conviction of the Holy Spirit readily confess this activity is wrong and if they want to continue in serving the Lord, understand the illicit activity must be forsaken.

I fail to understand men/who profess to believe the Bible attempting to totally wrest the clear meaning and plain statement of the scripture to justify their behavior.

The argument/rant of this activity being "driven by genes" is parroted far and wide as an acceptable excuse. I do not believe that the "gene" Billy James Hargis blamed long ago is a viable excuse for unscriptural activity.

But suppose for a moment we buy the "gene" proposition. I recall several studies that posited that murderers have a defective gene which propels them to this heinous action. Does this "driving gene" excuse their action? Of course not, and neither does any "gene" driving biblically proscribed action excuse the person or person engaging in the said activity.

We are not left to our own resources in these matters for God is on record as to the mechanics of restoration. Of course I do not have space for a doctrinal treatise on the subject, but I am adamant the process begins somewhere around Proverbs 28:13:

"He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy."

As much as I hate for the Brothers/Sisters to fall prey to the wiles of Satan, I am even more troubled when they who know better continue in the activity and whiningly attempt to excuse it by placing the blame on God. Do I hear echoes from Eden and Adam, the prototype sinner who blamed his plight on God?
