The Heart of a Quilter

She hurries through dishes and many chores
Just so she can sit down once more -
Not for a rest, but a blessing to be -
A soft quilt to cradle the newest baby.

She has taken much time in the choosing process,
Colors that soothe and you’d like to caress -
Fabric that feels like soft skin to touch -
That’s what the babies enjoy so much.

She wants something happy - and a batting that holds,
Dries quickly and fluffs up right under his nose.
In her secret heart she hopes that he’ll connect
This quilt with his comfort - security check.

For there in the stitches and binding are found
Well wishes and blessings in prayers she has wound
Around all the edges with touches of love
Interceding to God for help from above.

“Bless this life, Father, with health and good will;
A happy heart and service to fill,
All of his days may he whisper to Thee
And, at the last , grant there’ll be Heaven to see!”

When it’s finished the quilter’s heart’s satisfied...
But, she just heard of someone whose just arrived
At the doorway of illness and probably needs
A warm quilt to wrap up around his feet!

...And Jesus, in Your life on our cold old earth -
You’d have liked her quilt at the time of Your birth;
I wish she’d have been there - her comfort to give,
But in these, whom she services, Lord, ...You live!
