Suffer The Little Children

Luke 18:16 But Jesus called them unto him, and said, Suffer little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for of such is the kingdom of God.

That word suffer in Old English mean “let” or “allow.” I am going to use it for this article in the context of the real meaning of suffer-which is pain, humiliation, sorrow and devastation because of circumstances.

What is the plight of children of many disadvantaged in the United States of America? What is the plight of many disadvantage children in the world?

It is a plight of suffering. In many countries the welfare of the child is not a top priority of the nation.

It is not uncommon in some disadvantaged countries to see children as young as three years old, wandering the streets, homeless and alone, begging for a scrap of bread.

Can you imagine the outrage in a country like the United States to see a 3, 4, 5, year old walking around in rags and left to themselves for months, years at a time-becoming the object of ridicule, full of shame, confusion, and neglect?

What a tragedy you say? It is. The charities cannot save every homeless child. The people of every nation need to learn that it is also their responsibility to rescue as many of these children as they can.

We here in the United States have our own tragedies. Primarily the offspring of the Meth Addict and other drug and alcohol addicted people.

This suffering is happening all over America, but especially in Middle America, in isolated rural and farm areas and in urban cities.

Methamphetamine has devastated many previously strong and stalwart rural American farm families. Some isolate themselves on purpose to hide this problem.
Among those struggling with these addictions,it is not uncommon to find their 4 and 5 year olds still in diapers because the drug addicted parent has neglected to train the child.

We have been taught that drugs like Methamphetamine destroy the teeth of adults, but the teeth of the neglected children are also destroyed because of parental neglect. Their diet often consist of junk food, sweets, and fast food and there is a lack of dental hygiene.

Do you know someone who is floating on a self indulgent cloud of chemicals while their child is slowing sinking into despair and abandonment? It is subtle, but it is happening.
Make a call. Go and check on them. Be nosy. Be a pest. You may be able to save that child.

A woman testified that she enjoyed doing drugs and decided that she would work out a plan so that she could enjoy her drugs and raise a wonderful family, too.

Her children were toddlers and she tried to make sure that they were well taken care of and fed properly. She tried hard to expose them to books and magazines.
She gave them plenty of hugs and kisses and acceptance, but when they were sleeping, she brought out her drugs. This went on for many years.

The mother thought she had done a great job in raising her children, but when she went to enroll them in school, she was told that they needed to be put back a year. Why? Her children could not talk. They communicated like babies.

She had isolated herself from people to hide her drug use so long that the children had no social skills. They were whiny and fearful of the teachers and the other children, too. She had tried to outsmart Meth, but it had taken its toll on her children eventually.

One More example. A teacher was a closet drug user and was able to maintain a job and take care of his family for decades.

Then one day he had an experience that forever changed his life. The year was 1999. He looked at the calendar and began to stress out. He began to ask everyone why the calendar said the year was 1999. Something was wrong with his memory.

He got up from his desk and ran to his coworkers classrooms asking about their calendars, too.
Finally someone called the Paramedics and he was taken to the hospital.
The man testified that the last year he remembered was 1989.
Somehow he had been going through life like a zombie for ten years and did not know it. He lost ten years and cannot remember where they went.

This teacher was operating on auto pilot for a decade-teaching, grading papers, meeting with parents, making out reports-all of the things that teachers have to do and he does not remember any of it. Again, substance abuse won out in the end.

The children are suffering everywhere. In the richest nations and in the poorest.
In the poorer nations many families and governing bodies are disadvantaged in many ways but have to be taught to reach out to the abandoned and homeless child wherever they see them.
Like the good Samaritan they cannot simply walk on by.

No, all of the charities and organizations in the world cannot save all of the children. There are still many millions that fall through the cracks.
Christian people and people of good will can demand changes worldwide and in the United States too, so that children of known impaired people will be rescued from danger and neglect.

Sometimes saving a child can be accomplished by simply calling on someone on a regular basis.
The selfish and neglectful addict who knows someone will come around every once in a while will often try to be a better parent.
