'....so Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many people...Hebrews 9:28


This sacrifice was agreed upon by God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. The Apostle Paul refers to it as a propitiation, a substitution for our transgressions - sins for which we as corrupt humans manifesting a sin nature could not have paid the price for our redemption.

It's important to remember that Christ manifested a hypostatic union: completely human and simultaneously completely God. We can't really hope to fully comprehend this in our lifetime here on Earth before the completion of our redemption.
However, it's essential to recognize that the Christ who voluntarily and obediently endured the unimaginable torture, and subsequent crucification on the cross was God the Son.

God the Father could have chosen to delete the human race from it's existence in time and space but as John 3:16 states, He so loved the world that He sent his one and only Son.

A Bible instructor I had said in one of his lectures that it would have been unjust to sacrifice a member of the human race; remember, this propitiatory sacrifice, given God's omniscience, would be for the sins of those having died, those living at the time and those humans not yet born - sins which haven't even been committed yet. However, it would be just for the Almighty Judge to take the penalty. Given the nature of the Trinity, Christ - our loving sacrificial Lamb, both fully God and fully man...simultaneously was that Almighty Judge, God the Father.

He could have stopped the torture and humiliation on the cross at any time, but He was sent to Earth with a mission; a mission to accept and pay our penalty and subsequently justify us before the Father, offering the free gift of salvation to all who are called and convicted by the Spirit, and accepting of such an offer - one which we did not and could not earn, but was bought for us by the shedding of Christ's blood.

Therefore, Tetelestai...the mission of Christ was totally completed never needing to be repeated.
The sins of many...past, present and future have been paid for, justifying us before God the Father and affording us the free gift of eternal salvation .
