True Love

When man and woman first get together,
They think so often it is forever
He brings her flowers every night and she
Wears his favorite dress and her best perfume
It’s one continuous movie romance
Their hearts fly like seven-forty-sevens

But like daffodils in the spring, such love
Requires full sunlight to maintain life2
Eventually the shade of activity begins
He cancels their dates for business meetings
And forgets to send flowers in his stead
She, too works late at times, so when they date
She answers the door in jeans and a shirt
The romance, like daffodils, quickly dies

Often, the relationship dies with it
But not so if it is lasting true love
But, does such love exist for us today,
And if it does, what is it, how do I,
The woman in me build, it, the poet,
The poet in me, show it, describe it

I can build true love on one foundation,
The foundation of Jesus, of my God
True love to me involves a partnership
A Partnership between Heaven and Earth
A new Trinity, the man, God, and me
But that’s the foundation, what of the rest
With Jesus we can build it, how oh, how
To describe it, love as the hope diamond
That’s the challenge now for me, the poet

So how do I, the poet in me show,
Describe without clichés or quoting greats
Like Bronte or Browning, Elizabeth Browning3
With Jesus, the poet in me shall try
But first, I shall write what true love is not
It is not feelings flying through the air

It is active protection from danger
It says I’d rather walk through fire than have one
I love get burned and if burns are sustained
By my beloved, I want always to be balm
And desire, by no means, to be their cause
If for some reason ever I am, I
Quickly, will seek to apply the aloe
The aloe of sincere apology
Perhaps, a reassuring hug or kiss

It also says I will give my beloved
The space to sit alone and pray or cry--
Watch tv or take a walk outside to think
Whatever, my beloved needs to start to heal
However, the goal is to apply the balm
Apply the balm before bedtime arrives

True love asserts any conflagration
No matter what the cause will purify
Purify us like Jesus will the earth
After, he returns with His people
And make us strong and sturdy as pine wood
Sparkling like a champagne-colored diamond
Weather- resistant as the evergreen 5
Able to survive a Russian winter
1 The poem is a response to Emily Bronte’s “Love and Friendship”
2 According to the gardening segment on “The Weather Channel,” daffodils require full sunlight to survive.
3 Bronte refers to Emily and Elizabeth Browning wrote a famous poem about true love called “How Do I Love Thee.”

4 I probably learned this on Science, Scripture and Salvation
