Larry Lilly's Letter Monday May 14, 2007
I always attempt to write a truly provocative letter on Mondays. I do this because many people need more than a caffeine lift. Most could use a face lift, a tummy tuck and a good old fashioned revival after a weekend of debauchery. Debauchery in this case may be the things you think of when you hear or read the word. But debauchery comes in many forms, not the least of which is the couch potato syndrome, just lying on the couch, munching, munching anything from cheeses, chips, to prime rib sandwiches, soda, beer, or, may the good Lord forbid, 2% milk. I thought the 2% milk would get your motor running!
Spell check changed my "laying" on the couch to "lying" and I figure whoever wrote the program must be related to some folks I know who no matter where they are sitting, you can bet they are lying.
You do realize that I am writing these lines from "the charred walls of the damned" as I was consigned to this realm of torture as punishment for the Friday article which pointed out the illegal punishment of a man found innocent by a duly constituted jury of peers. As near as I can tell the only way he could legally be denied service will be the posting of signs stating that no one who has ever lost a CIVIL case will be served on "These Here Premises." As far as I know there are no degrees in civil cases. I do understand why such an upstanding crowd as Horse Racing Track people would be appalled to be seated in the same restaurant with an "unsavory" character.
In our fair land to have an opinion is protected by our constitution and the rule of common sense. It is legal to express this held opinion verbally such as "I think" or "In my opinion." It is illegal to do much more than this. Thankfully we are not permitted to discriminate against folks based on our personal opinion. Just because you "feel" some man or woman isn’t worth shooting, doesn't give you the legal right to proceed from thought to action. The thought, while unscriptural, is not illegal, but the act will place you in confines to give long sobering thought to the action connected with the thought. This is but one reason the Lord teaches us to "think on good things." Philippians 4:8.
Think on good things. Think on good people. Good instruction from the Word.
The truth of learning to control our meditated upon thoughts is the primary tool in living a life of victory. If we permit our minds and hearts to focus on revenge, resentment, and the unfairness of life, we then open our life to the ravages of such thinking. Thoughts of revenge, resentment lead to the idea that God is not dealing with someone or some group in the manner which we prefer. This is why we are forbidden to engage in this type of thought life. God will and is taking care of things within the frame of His infinite wisdom. To be "bitter of soul" is to flee from the truth that the Lord knoweth and doeth all things well, in His time and in His way. Bitterness of soul is the result of refusing to trust the Lord.
If life hands you a lemon, make lemonade, Jesus will put in the sugar.
