Remember the song of old entitled "Trust and Obey"? Once sung out of ritual as a child, I did not realize the impact of those lyrics until I came to a point in life where I had to trust and obey. Even though trusting God in my circumstances was hard & the outcome was unknown, I knew there was no other way. Deep in my heart I knew that not listening to God would be far worse than any circumstance I might face.

Trust, though, can be a tricky thing. How does a person trust in this world? A majority of us have been taught to be independent, self-sufficient ~ that if you want anything done, you gotta' do it yourself. Perhaps we learned to take control of our own lives because someone or something robbed us from the innocence of trust at an early age. Even if someone tried to get close, they were kept at arms' length due to the possibility of an underlying motive. Many were inadvertently taught that trust is a bad thing. Whatever the case, how do we learn to trust God?

I heard a good quote on the radio the other day that stated "to trust someone, you have to know them." I thought, there it is... "how can a person trust God if they don't know Him?" Not just know of Him - but know Him on an intimate level. What is your relationship with Him? Is He an acquaintance... someone that you only invite in on special occasions? Is He a long-lost friend that you once knew but drifted away from? Or is He your best friend - someone that you has seen you through times of joy and crisis? Maybe He is an enemy to some extent - perhaps you see Him as a harsh, abusive authority figure. Your answer will most likely determine your perspective & trust level of Him.

If you have difficulty trusting, be rest assured that there is a difference between God and man. Because we are a sinful creature, there will always be someone that lets us down and we will do the same. But, God is different ~ I know this personally and from studying on it. Numbers 23:19 says "God is not a man, that He should lie. He is not a human, that He should change His mind. Has He ever spoken and failed to act? Has He ever promised and not carried it through?" God says in Hebrews 13:5 "I will never fail you. I will never forsake you." Although trusting is not always the easy choice, the Lord always has our best interest in mind. His thoughts & ways are so entirely different than ours. He will not reject you, overlook you, abandon you or discard you – He will surprise you.

So, how do you get to know Him on such a close level? First of all, pray & ask Him to fill your heart – surrender the walls fortifying your heart. Believe that God sent his Son, Jesus, to take the place of all sin in your life - there is no sin too great - God planned your life & knows all sin... He is just waiting for you to talk to Him about it. Commit your life to Him – that means trust and obey irregardless of what you want at the time. Find out just how to trust and what you need to obey from the Bible. You will read of stories that relate to your current circumstances; you will be given guidance to endure daily; and most importantly, you will learn that the Lord can be trusted with all that you will give Him. His arms are open, waiting for you....

“Trust in the Lord and do good. Then you will live safely in the land and prosper. Take delight in the Lord, and He will give you your heart’s desires. Commit everything you do to the Lord. Trust Him, and He will help you.” Psalm 37: 3-5
