Larry Lilly's Letter Wednesday May 9, 2007
I have been blessed for nearly a year with the teaching of Pastor Dick Triestram. Dick has many years experience as a pastor, teen evangelist and Bible School Impresario. He has won people to Christ in Mexico and other foreign countries as well as hundreds of young people to Christ through the use of illustrations usually referred to as "Gospel Magic."
Sunday past Dick taught the Adult Bible Class a lesson titled, "The Problem of Loneliness." WOW. Move over Swindoll.
Dick quoted a statement from the British Broadcasting Company, stating:
"Most people go through life in a coffin of loneliness."
Dick pointed out that a place can be a place of loneliness. We all know that displacement, moving to a new location can cause a huge change in our outlook on life. Many are the people who move from a small country place and they soon become dissatisfied with the brand of religion offered in the bigger city churches. They spend most of the rest of their life pining away for the old home place, and never develop a real life in the new place, spending time and money every day off to go back home for the weekend. Many of what are now "big city" churched grew to be such by recognizing this human tragedy and creating a country atmosphere on Main Street. A few years ago it was not unusual to preach in a church of a thousand members and find few if any natives to that city. For the most part a “"church" is identified by cultural markers, and not necessarily biblical ones.
Dick stated, that loneliness can be overcome by clinging to God's known will for your life and he used the fact that Paul wrote the book of Philippians among others from the place most people consider to be the loneliest of all, prison. A place can be lonely, but only as we make a choice to be lonely. Paul enjoyed to presence of Christ in the place God planted him.
Have you ever heard or used the phrase, "It's lonely at the top?" This is used as an excuse for all sorts of problems, such as alcoholism and other addictions. Many are the housewives that attribute a weight problem to loneliness. Immorality is often said to be caused by a feeling of loneliness. Some prisoners of war and other types of prisoners have gone insane when deprived of human contact. Of course true loneliness has little to nothing to do with the crowd or lack thereof, loneliness is on the inside. Large corporations spend millions of dollars each year teaching high placed executives how to deal with loneliness.
Dick has a "Million Dollar Outline" on how to cope with and defeat loneliness. He will send a free copy to you. Just email him at [email protected] be sure to ask for the cure for loneliness. Tell him Larry sent you.
