The Monkey and the Man
I was walking all alone,
In a jungle I called home
When the cutest little monkey came to me;
And he rode upon my shoulder,
Never seemed he to grow bolder -
And I thought to keep him just for company.
So, I fed him now and then,
He was mild and very slim,
He would often cause a smile upon my face;
But I fed him more and more,
And he grew in size galore
‘Til my shoulder didn’t seem a riding place.
He demanded lots more food -
Slapped and bit me - was so rude;
And I struggled so to tear him from my arm!
But he held on all the harder
All the time agrowin’ larger -
And it pleasured him to always do me harm!
Now I’m working all the time
For a monkey I called mine
But you see the foolish claim of my possession;
For the freedom lost is mine!
He could leave me anytime
And he surely doesn’t need my sweet concession!
How I rue the awful day
When I thought I could just play
With that monkey - never checked out his ancestry;
Had I studied I’d have known
That I’d never, never own
What’s revealed to be a monster throughout history!
