When God called Abraham in Genesis 12:1-9, it took the act of obedience for him to respond. Naturally, it is not easy for a seventy five year old man to leave the only place he has known all his life and head to the unknown. Abraham did just that and departed from Haran to Canaan. "And he believed in the Lord and He accounted it to him for righteousness."Genesis15:6.

We are quite familiar with this story, but I want to point our a few things that relate to our call as christians. God has called us to walk and serve Him just like Abraham of old. Since Abraham is our spiritual father, we can also follow his example. In Hebrews 6:12, the bible says ".....but followers of them who through faith and patience inherit the promises."(KJV)

1)Abraham responded even though he did not know where he was going, this was an act of obedience and faith. God demands absolute obedience from us, "Ye shall walk after the Lord your God....obey His voice...."Duet 13:4(KJV). ".........to obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed is better than the fat of rams."1Samuel 15:22.

2) Abraham left Haran to Canaan. God has plans to take us from the beginning of the journey to the end. "being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Christ."Phillipians1:6(KJV).

3) Abraham's obedience was counted as righteousness,the same way we become the righteousness of God. "For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him." 2Corinthians5:21(KJV).

4) Abraham was not afraid of what people will say or do to him for leaving his land. He was not even afraid of the unknown. Our response to the call of God brings boldness to do His will. "for ye have not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but ye have receive the spirit of adoption, whereby we cry Abba, Father." Romans8:15(KJV) "For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind." 2Timothy(KJV).

5) God also told Abraham that He will make him a great nation and bless him. There is no doubt that the call of God comes with blessings and multiplication. "That in blessing I will bless thee, and in multiplication, I will multiply thy seed as the stars of heaven,....." Geneis 12:17(KJV)

6)Abraham left his people and seperated himself to God. We are called to live a holy life, forsaking worldly ways and be different. "Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye seperate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you." 2Corinthians 6:17(KJV).

7) Abraham's name was changed from Abram to Abraham. Praise God! we have a new name, in other words, whatever evil or negative things have been associated with us, we identify with the positive nature of God.

Finally in Genesis 15:1, God told Abraham ".........I am thy shield, and thy exceeding great reward." We have far greater reward not only on earth but treasures laid up for us in heaven. I conclude with the fact that the call is not without obstacles, but God has promised to see us through. Amen
