Encouragement
I smile a lot. Some people think I have some sort of mental disorder. I even smile when someone says something nasty to me. (Well, not all the time. It depends on the comment.) Nonetheless, my mother said I was smiling when I came out of the womb! (Well, she did not say those words exactly, but I thought I would give her a little help!) Okay, I know people may not care if I smile a lot, but the point I am trying to make is that a smile can go a long way.
One day I was waiting to meet a friend for dinner. Unfortunately, hunger pains were gnawing a hole in my stomach. I suddenly decided to do something to take my mind off my pain: I fiddled with my cell phone. However, this activity did not help to distract me. Therefore, I decided to just put my cell phone in my pocket and take in the view. I was sitting in the hallway in front of the entrance of the restaurant. When people entered , I was the first person they saw! So I would politely smile and say hello. Some people would respond back with hearty hellos and a great big smile. Some would respond with a half grunt. Some would not respond at all. Then a great idea occurred to me: Wouldn't it be great to see what kind of response I could get from people if I simply smiled at them? So I began taking a mental survey(Don't scold me! I know I should have pen and pad ready at all times, but I was really hungry!) . Some individuals would not smile if I did not smile first. Some individuals would smile at me first and I could not help but to say hi to them. The majority of the time I would smile and I would get an instant ”hello”. I noticed, however, few individuals just totally avoided eye contact with me.
My conclusion is a majority of people do respond to smiles even when they are feeling down. A smile can go a long way. It can uplift a downtrodden spirit and it makes a person feel acceptable. Everyone needs love and acceptance, even if it comes packaged in a smile. Think about it, some people have murdered others just to get attention. Some are an exception to the rule: they are just down right mean. They feel good about making others miserable. I can only pray for them. However, others want kindness, but they just do not know how to respond to it when they receive it. Maybe at home they have a spouse or kids or other relatives that constantly reject them. They are shock to receive any kindness.
I want to encourage others to try to smile and speak to as many people as possible. Imagine living in a society in which everyone smiled and politely greeted everyone all the time. I constantly remind myself that some people do not speak or smile because they do not want to be rejected. They often reject others first to avoid being rejected. Believe me, rejection hurts!. My hope is people will realize they are only hurting themselves when they do not respond to a greeting . The person giving the greeting is offering kindness. I do not think there is anyone in this world who does not want kindness (If so, they are not human! The smile is a precious gift from God given to mankind. My hope is people will use it more often!
