Looking For God’s Assistance?

A man, we will call Luke Farrell, bought 100 acres of land 6 miles east of Earlsboro, Oklahoma. When he went to look over the property he had purchased the week before, he found the residence with all its windows broken out, paint peeling inside and out, weeds high enough to hide the lower third of the house. Though he had never seen his property prior to its purchase, he did not express anger or discontent for having bought it. In time, Luke found many, many other defects and problems needing replacement or repair. Slowly, Luke’s back-breaking work transformed his property into a place of beauty. The house roof was repaired, the inside refurbished, fences mended, the weeds killed and replaced with grass and the pastures given over to cattle and horses he had also purchased.

Late one summer day, a neighbor came by and, with one foot on the running board of his truck, observed, “God and you sure made big changes in this place, Luke. I’m really glad you’re a neighbor! Welcome to Earlsboro!

Luke indicated he was grateful to God for every gift He had seen fit to give him. Then he added as an aside, “You should have seen this property when He was running it by Himself!”

Humor aside. Have your ever noticed that God doesn’t do for us what we should and could do for ourselves? And haven’t you heard those who criticize God and Christianity make this point a basis of their philosophical argument for their rejection of the notion of God and Christianity? That is, the direct intervention of God in the affairs of humankind. Humankind should never criticize God for His not intervening in every act involving human activity. Satisfaction for a job well done is one of life’s richest and potentially enduring blessings. When Jesus stated that God sees to the needs of His creative masterpieces one such being birds, He didn’t and doesn’t throw the food in their nests!
