Whatever!!!
© 2007

by

Stephen A. Peterson

Margaret Talton worked two cubicles down from Jessica Carpenter a recent graduate from the University of Oklahoma school of business. Margaret quickly learned that Jessica had the habit of responding to just about every question, comment or conclusion of her statements with the word: “Whatever!”

If Margaret or another office worker would say, “Jessica, would you like Mexican food or Chinese food?”

“Whatever!”

Regardless of the office commentary or the subject, Jessica managed somehow to use “whatever” seemingly dozens a time in a given day. For Margaret, the use of “whatever” for every possible response seemed impossible to do but Jessica managed to do just that with that one word.

Jessica nearly drove Margaret out of her mind in the process. One morning, after about the tenth or twelfth “whatever” Margaret said to herself, “Jesus, if Jessica says ‘whatever’ one more time, I’m going to lose it! Help me Jesus!” No sooner had Margaret called on Jesus’ help did she realize that prayer was what she really needed in order to deal with her co-worker’s habit. Instead of being bothered by Jessica’s “whatever” habit, Margaret learned to use it as a stimulus to pray.

Are someone’s habits driving you to the brink of disgust or anger? Why not use the moment to pray for that person, yourself for patience or others? They will quickly become little moments that will most certainly bring you closer to the Kingdom of God! And maybe, just maybe the person you are concerned with.

We should do our best with our situations, pray and let God take care of the rest. He’s good at that—you know!!
