Why Seek Ye The Living Among The Dead?
Now upon the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they came unto the sepulcher, bringing the spices which they had prepared, and certain others came with them. And they found the stone rolled away from the sepulcher. And they entered in, and found not the body of the Lord Jesus. And it came to pass, as they were much perplexed about this, behold, two men stood by them in shinning garments: And as they were afraid, and bowed down their faces to the ground, they said unto them, Why seek ye the living among the dead? Luke 24:1-5;
Before crucifixion, the Lord Jesus Christ had on several occasions told His disciples about the death He would die and how God would raise Him from the dead. On the day He was crucified, the disciples watched helplessly as blood thirsty Roman soldiers nailed their Master to the cross amidst condemned criminals in a shameful and deplorable manner. Their hearts were weighed down within them as they imagined a future without the Lord with whom they have lived and related for thirty-three and a half years. All they could see and feel was terror of darkness as they concluded in their hearts that the light of the world had gone. They were all confused, perplexed and scattered without any ray of hope.
It appears that the disciples had forgotten all that the Lord told them; they had forgotten that the Lord’s death was not the end but the beginning of triumph over the devil. They didn't remember the Lord's death was to culminate in newness of life for mankind. They had forgotten that the Almighty God would not leave the soul of His beloved Son in hell nor suffer His holy one to see corruption. If they had remembered all of these, their hearts would not have sunk in sorrow and despair.
Three days after the Lord was crucified, the disciples came to the tomb with a sorrowful heart looking for the His body in the grave. They came with spices and perfume to anoint a dead body when they were supposed to be excited to meet the RISEN LORD! They were looking for the Lord in the wrong place. They didn’t know that the rejoicing of the powers of darkness who thought they had overcome our Lord and Saviour was for a short while. They came seeking the living among the dead.
Alas the grave was empty! The Lord had risen to glory just as He already told them. The angels standing at the empty grave questioned the unbelieving disciples in anger and fury ‘Why seek ye the Living among the dead?’ Of course the disciples were not expected to come looking for a dead Lord in the grave if they really believed the words spoken to them by the Lord before His crucifixion. Great was their unbelief!
It is a pity that many believers are still seeking the living among the dead! They are void of knowledge of God and the limitless power of the Holy Spirit. Their lack of faith in the word of God has blindfolded their eyes that they are unable to see the risen Lord in their situations and challenges. They are still going about wearing gloomy faces carrying ‘spices and perfumes’ of unbelief to anoint a dead body when they are supposed to be full of life, hope, joy and excitement to meet the RISEN LORD.
The devil is satisfied as long as he sees you live your life as though you serve a Lord that is still behind the stone. You’ve got to stop living your life as someone seeking the living among the dead. Change your thoughts and begin to see your life the way God sees it. Throw away those ‘spices and perfumes’ with which you preserve ‘dead body’ of guilt, problems, sickness and reproaches over the years. You have no business with the dead; THE LORD IS RISEN!
Resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ has brought a new dawn to mankind. God is giving you a new beginning now. It does not matter how long you have been telling stories of woe, a new dawn is breaking for you. An end is coming to those things that have hitherto troubled your life. Remember, the rejoicing of the devil and powers of darkness when they succeeded in crucifying the Lord of glory only lasted for three days! Your problems and challenges will not last forever. The Lord Jesus Christ rose from the dead on the first day of the week and not in the middle of the week so as to mark a new beginning! From now, have a new expectation because THE RISEN LORD is doing new things in your life. Stop seeking the living among the dead.
Shalom.
