I looked behind, hearing a noise
Truth unkind, no love for voice;
And then I saw, that it was you
A heart unthawed, words icy blue;

You love to speak of going to hell,
Fail to beseech and raise a smell;
Brimstone fire your proclamation,
Maybe that ire’s your destination;

But I will pray a balm for your eyes,
The Lord to say, to my surprise,
That I would find you’re not cast
To hell unkind, dear son o’ brass;

You declare you are God’s wheat,
Yet seem a tare, and incomplete;
May I, in this, be so wrong;
You’re without bliss, and with no song;

Any can speak of what they hate
And love their speech and so prate;
It shows their god of this earth;
No love to laud, void of mirth;

Do you preach Christ from envy and strife?
Does your speech show you have the Life?
Many still see your message irreverent
And will see just what’s the difference;

He’ll use the difference to save so many;
To bring in reverent souls aplenty;
So then I say that I will rejoice;
With thanks I’ll pray that He’s their choice;

So for now, my heart aches;
To Him I bow, for your sake;
I’d love to have you as my brother,
And so make glad the One true Father.

And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. “Some indeed preach Christ even from envy and strife, and some also from goodwill: The former preach Christ from selfish ambition, not sincerely, supposing to add affliction to my chains; but the latter out of love, knowing that I am appointed for the defense of the gospel. What then? Only that in every way, whether in pretense or in truth, Christ is preached; and in this I rejoice, yes, and will rejoice.”—Philippians 1:15-18
