What is this old commandment that is yet new? How can the old and the new be the same? On its face this assertion by John seems impossible. What he is telling us is that the Mosaic Law and the freedom from that law reveal the same thing. How can the Law and freedom from that very same Law show us the same thing?
Jesus told His disciples,
“Unto you it is given to know the mystery of the kingdom of God: but unto them that are without, all [these] things are done in parables: That seeing they may see, and not perceive; and hearing they may hear, and not understand; lest at any time they should be converted, and their sins should be forgiven them.” - Mark 4:11-12 [Translation note: the Greek does not include the word these, the translators added it because it made the sentence more readable.]
He also told them,
“Search the scriptures…: and they are they which testify of me.” - John 5:39
And then on the road to Emmaus,
“And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.” - Luke 24:27
Jesus is teaching His disciples how to understand scripture. He has revealed to them that all of scripture speaks of Him and only of Him. That all things made of God are a parable of the mystery of God, “…Christ in you, the hope of glory.” (ref. Colossians 1:27) The new commandment is the old commandment! Only now the true light reveals it in its fullness. Every man has the opportunity to see the Truth and the Light. It is no longer hidden in a single people, “For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men….” - Titus 2:11
Knowing that a believer is in the Light, the test of faith is love. Love is not that know in your stomach feeling, love is not sexual arousal, love is not even seated in your emotions. Love is self-sacrifice. Jesus told His disciples,
“Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.“ - John 15:13
When your interests are subservient to your neighbor’s, that is love. When your interests come first, before those of your neighbor, that is hate. So every thought or action that includes as its predicate, I, me, my or mine, is void of love. Those thoughts and actions separate us from our neighbor, and separate us from the grace, mercy and love of Christ, the Light. In our self-centeredness, we stumble through the darkness. The ego blinds us from the Truth. I pray that God will open your eyes, as he opened the eyes of Luke and Cleopus on the Road to Emmaus.
