God’s Most Special Gift

Seven year old Tonya Hernando ran into the counselors’ break room. Her hazel eyes appeared wide with excitement. She bore breaking news she wanted the world to hear.

“I have a boyfriend!” she announced.

“You do?” responded Dr. Deborah Meeks. “Can you tell me something about this special person?”

“Well, yes, Dr. Meeks! He’s smart! He’s really nice and kind. And he’s the cutest boy in our whole 2nd grade class. He likes peach ice cream just like me! He’s been my boyfriend for three hours now!”

Dr. Meeks congratulated Tonya as she began putting away her testing material and straightening up the other materials on the lone desk in the room. At that moment, Dr. Meeks’ cell phone rang. It was 82 year old Agnes Demos who asked her if she would come to her house. Thinking Ms. Demos was in trouble, Dr. Henry hurried to her house where she quickly opened the door.

“Dr. Meeks!” she said smiling “I have a gentleman friend! We’ve been seeing each other for nearly nine months now. That’s almost a year, you know! He’s a wonderful person! He’s thoughtful. He’s kind and smart. And he’s about the most handsome man you’d ever seen!”

She went on and on discussing his talents, virtues and attributes. And as Dr. Meeks listened to her, she realized the human capacity to love another is a skill unimpeded by time and space. A person’s skin may wrinkle, bones become arthritic, and their memory may wane but the capacity to know, experience and hunger for unconditional love is with humans from womb to tomb. And regardless of age, remains enlivening and special throughout one’s life. It is without question or debate God’s precious and special gift. Unconditional love and its presence proves His existence and supports the Biblical statement--God is love!
