Thousands of tiny stars puncture the evening sky
While trails of resolve & laughter line my face
Like paragraphs spilling onto an empty page,
Each telling its own story

I stare into the summer darkness, embracing obscurity
While the moment squirms between my fingers
Refusing to be held

The minutes tick by with savage innocence
Oblivious to the state of my heart

A lazy breeze wraps its moist breath around me
As the heat of the day dissipates,
And I dream

I dream of mistakes I never made
Of realities that are not real
Of friends I never knew
And lies I never told

I dream of games I’ve never played
Of poems I never wrote
Of songs I never sung
And family I’ve never known

I dream of summers that never end
Of children who don’t grow old
Of homes filled with love
And moments so long ago

I dream of a brilliant nocturnal sky
This grey morning,
all alone
