Realizing God’s Gifts

Nineteen months ago 16 year old Jenna Parker’s grandfather died. Her grandfather’s death left a void in her life. As she and Terri Connors, her best friend sat on the porch of her house, Jenna said, “Grandpa was so good to me. I could talk to him about anything. He’d listen to me and let me know that I was his special granddaughter. He made things right when I was sad. He’d dried my tears and made me feel good when people hurt me. I’m really a shy person—a kind of social outcast. Many things I did with grandpa are now closed to me now. I feel I have lost everything that made my life enjoyable.”
Terri, with a tear in her eye, held Jenna’s hand then told her to look at what she had left not at what she had lost. Leaning across the porch table towards Jenna, Terri continued, “You have me to talk to. I’m sure you have the support and love of your mom, dad and brother if you allow them to help you and give you the support you desire. Your grandpa is with the Lord now. I would think he wants his granddaughter to rejoice in his victory. He has won his crown, Jenna. I’m sure he’s praying for you in heaven and sends his unconditional love to you right now!”
It was at that point Jenna realized how much she did have—her living family members, friends, good health, a home, food and much, much more! As Terri left her house that afternoon, Jenna said a prayer for herself:
“Lord Jesus, I thank you for all the people you have seen fit to give
me. Grant me, O God, the wisdom always to leave behind that which
is past and gone, and to be grateful for those people and things I still
have which you have blessed me with. Amen.
Grief can indeed give way to joy if we are open to God’s unconditional love, mercy and compassion. Every person experiences doubt, loss and does not realize the bountiful gifts bestowed upon them by God. Who are you able to go to discuss personal difficulties and problems? List three
