Psalm 51:1-12 – Restored by Love
Key Verses:
- 1: “Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love…blot out my transgressions.” – Amazingly this is God’s promise. No matter what we do, if we turn to Him and repent with our entire heart and soul, He will forgive and forget.
- 2: “Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin.” – God will reach into our hearts and change us; washing not only the remnants and guilt of our sins away, but He will also provide us guidance and hope in order to avoid repeating these sins again in the future.
- 4: “Against you, you alone, have I sinned.” – Sin creates distance from God. With our sins we separate ourselves from our created purpose, which is to praise and worship God.
- 10: “Create in me a clean heart, O God.” – David is asking for God, the Creator of the Universe, to work His amazing creative ability within him. He is asking for God to enter and create a new life.
- 11: “Do not cast me away from your presence, and do not take your holy spirit from me.” – Nothing could be worse than to be isolated from God’s love.
- 12: “Restore to me the joy of your salvation and sustain in me a willing spirit.” – God wants us to be close to Him so that we can experience the joy of His presence in our lives.
- Do you recognize that no sin is too great to be forgiven? David had fallen in love with another man’s wife. He became obsessed with Bathsheba to the point that nothing else mattered. He indulged in her love and then murdered her husband to cover it up. Do you have any issues in your life that you are holding onto and have not turned over to God? Have you held back from asking for His mercy? Why?
- Do you agree that sin creates distance between you and God? Who does this hurt the most? Do you recognize that no matter how small or seemingly harmless the transgression, that it is God who suffers most? Why is this? Is it because in our sins we are unable to worship Him in the manner in which He intended? Does it bring you new perspective to know that your actions reflect on God and God alone?
- Have you ever asked for God’s Holy Spirit to enter your heart and help create in you a new life for Him? Have you experienced the presence of His love? If you have, could you imagine living without it? On the other hand, have you ever felt isolated and abandoned by God? How did it feel? What was the cause of that isolation? Did it have anything to do with your life choices at the time? Can you see that we were not created to be separated from God? Do you recognize that isolation from His love is a direct result of our own actions and that He wants, more than anything, for us to experience the presence of His spirit and the joy of His grace?
- Today’s verses are exploring the result of sin in our lives. Who is the ultimate victim of your sins? Are you willing to stand in judgment for your sins? Through confession are you able to accept God’s forgiveness? How does the process of reconciliation work with God? Does our calling as believer’s into the body of Christ play a role in this process? What are your thoughts about God’s role in judgment and punishment? In what ways are these issues about the kingdom of God?
David’s Song of Lament provides a model of reconciliation we can use whenever we find that we have grown apart from God through sin, neglect or willfulness. Through repentance all sins are forgiven. Nothing we do is beyond His forgiveness. As we learn to recognize that our hearts have been cleansed through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ, that we are restored by His grace, we then can allow God to lead us to live lives that are more in alignment with His will and perfect plan.
