"He remembers his covenant forever, the word he commands, for a thousand generations, the covenant he made with Abraham his servant, the oath he swore to Isaac."
Psalm 105:8;9
As I was typing that, something came to mind. Have you ever heard people say, "times have changed?" As if its a way to excuse ungodly behaviour. Well, maybe times HAVE changed, but GOD has not, and His commands have not. God is good and gracious and compassionate. But He is also a God who is very powerful, and when He is angry, He is ANGRY. Here is an example, one of the best examples in history, of how God has excercised His wrath. "Every living thing that moved on earth perished-birds, livestock, wild animals, all the creatures that swarm over the earth, and all mankind. Everything on dry land that had the breath of life in its nostrils died. Every living thing on the face of the earth was wiped out, men and animals and the creatures that moved along the ground and the birds of the air were wiped from the earth. Only Noah was left, and those with him in the ark. the waters flooded the earth for one hundred and fifty days." -Genesis 7:20-24 God was not kidding! He brought forth His covenant, with man, and when they did not obey Him, He wiped them out and started over, though he preserved Noah and two of each animal, because Noah was rightous and kept the covenant with God. He cared about God and what He thought, so he was preserved. The others perished.
THE OLD COVENANT
God made His covenant with Abram, to establish a new people, the jewish people. He kept his promise to Abram that he would multiply him, until his people were as many as the stars in the sky. While Abram went through a lot, along with his wife, and eventually his son, God prospered His people, just as He said He would.
Abram was also faithful to God, and followed Him, because He trusted in the things God had said He would do. God never breaks His covenant with us, whenever a covenant with God is broken, it is always done by man, never by God. Just like in the times with Noah, man went away from God, and had to pay the price. Its no different now. When man seperates Himself from God, He has to pay the consequences of His actions, and face God's judgement and anger.
THE NEW COVENANT :)
God does not like to see us suffer, and He certainly does not like to see us walk alone without Him. He knows we are frightened and alone, and that no man can care for us the way only He can. So He set forth a new covenant, again, through a jewish man, His son, Jesus Christ of Nazareth. Jesus died on the cross for the sins of mankind, and when we put our hope and trust in Him, we are never put to shame(Romans 10:11). There is no condemnation in Christ Jesus(Romans 8:1), and by His death on the cross we are free from sin, and together, with our Father in Heaven, forever! Jesus is our second chance, to be redeemed with God, made right with Him. All fail and fall short of Gods glory. But when we call upon the name of the Lord, we are saved! God does not forget His covenant, the one when He established His people through Abram, or the one where He sent His own son to die for us! When we accept Jesus as our saviour, we enter into the New Covenant, with God and His son, and have the promise of eternity with them both, in a heavenly place. The jewish people were the begining of Gods covenant with man(all others were pagan, monotheistic on belief). And jesus is the end, Gods covenant with ALL mankind, so we may be with our God, forever, sharing in His sufferings, so we may also share in His GLORY!
DEAR LORD-WE THANK YOU THAT YOU SET FORTH A COVENANT FOR YOUR PEOPLE, ISRAEL, AND LATER FOR ALL MANKIND THROUGH JESUS THE MESSIAH. YOUR DEATH HAS SET US FREE FROM THE LAW OF SIN AND DEATH, FOR ANYONE WHO BELIEVES IN YOU, AND PUTS THEIR HOPE AND TRUST IN YOU! WE GIVE YOU PRAISE FOR YOUR SACRIFICE AND PERFECT LOVE.
IN THE NAME OF YOUR SON, WHO SET US FREE,
AMEN
Love in Jesus,
Jamie
