Larry Lilly's Letter Wednesday March 7, 2007
An old story illustrates the level of biblical knowledge in by-gone times and is good for comparative reasons to modern times.
A preacher entered a Sunday School class while the lesson was in progress, and asked a question. "Who broke down the walls of Jericho?" A boy answered, "I didn't do it." The preacher said to the teacher, "Is this the usual behavior on this class?" The teacher answered, "This boy is honest and I really believe him. I really don't think he did it." Leaving the room the preacher sought out a deacon and explained what had happened. The deacon said, "I have known both the teacher and boy for years and neither of them would do such a thing." By this time the preacher was heartsick and reported it to the Sunday School board. They said, "We see no point in being disturbed. Let's pay the bill for the damage to the walls and charge it to upkeep."
When this story first appeared it was considered a joke!! I thought I must add this just in case you thought the suggested resolution was a good idea.
Too many Christians claim to be confused by the many ideas concerning what they term social issues facing our churches. May I, in my most J. Vernon McGee voice, state what most Christians consider social issues are not that at all but are in fact willful sin issues. Name any politically correct or incorrect catch phrase of the day and it can only be thusly labeled due to a refusal to accept the plain meaning of the scripture. Take for instance the little play on words of a Miss Ann Coulter concerning a presidential candidate and you see what is meant. When she uttered the bleeped word that until recent times was used as a term for firewood, she made national headlines. Perhaps even international. Most think the term to be too harsh for former Senator Edwards. I disagree in that the term is much kinder than the biblical one, also fast becoming a bleep word, even in 'Bible' carrying circles. Such is the shame of our modern day. I have lost track of the people who have remarked, "Well, Brother Lilly the Bible was written a long time ago as I am sure you are aware." This statement seems to cover the gamut of what used to be sin, but are now social issues.
To hear a speaker in a non church setting refer, not the Bible per se, but to an incident or character is near unheard of in today's world, for the average target audience has no clue to whom or what you are referring. I did hear one charlatan attempt to impress his audience with some sort of deep spiritual wisdom by claiming the solution to a modern 'social issue' was akin to Crucifying Christ anew on Mt. Olympus. Oh, the wonder of Mt. Olympus! Any well educated person knows that Christ was not crucified on Mt. Olympus. Moses received the law on that mountain. Oh, the biblical ignorance of our day.
I am certain that most of my readers understand the humor in today's article, and I am also certain that most, upon reflection will conclude, this is too true to be funny.
