Larry Lilly's Letter Friday March 2, 2007

Having lived a long time and enjoyed the fruits of a few accomplishments, I get weary of the losers in the world singing, "I don't need nobody." I'm sure you have heard the many verses of the same song. The person singing this song may be high in the pecking order, but nowhere near as high as possible if he or she learned the value of giving and accepting help along the way.

A self made man stopped to soon, is the way I heard it said as a kid growing up in true poverty. I learned from teachers, preachers, coaches and others on the way up that it is wise to accept instruction and other forms of help along the way. And I am glad I did and still do for that matter.

The late Wilma Rudolph was a world champion Olympic runner, a basketball player at Tennessee State and over the years became a gigantic inspiration to all who heard her story. Born to a very poor black family, the twentieth of twenty two children, Wilma suffered from Polio, her legs were paralyzed and her mother was told Wilma would never walk. As I recall she used to wiggle her little legs in the braces, and when mom was out, she would take the braces off and try to walk. Well, the rest is history, for learn to walk she did to the tune of Three Gold Medals in the 1960 Olympics and a grand life that helped many others along the way. It is true that Wilma ran the course; she took the shots and rebounds. Wilma died with brain cancer in 1994. Wilma shared a secret that many refuse to accept as truth in the game of life:

"No matter what accomplishments you make, somebody helps you."

When we get our thinking in line with God's plan we develop a humility that the Lord uses to propel us even farther along His chosen path for us. God stated early on that it is not good for man to be alone. He created a wife, Eve, to help along the way. In addition it is easily seen that God created the necessity within the race for interdependence, the depending on the Lord and the people He determines to work through in our life. Over the course of my life I have received much from the Lord, and it usually comes from the hand of one or more of His people. Where it not for the help of prayer, and financial help, I could not do the work I do with the literature and prison ministry. To this point in this ministry I have never set a price or fee, every thing printed is sent out free and post paid. I do receive freewill offerings for the literature and my speaking engagements. I assume most are intelligent enough to grasp that while they receive the papers, books and even the daily letter, it is only through the care of someone else or really many someone else's that I can continue. I am eternally grateful for the help of others. As many have noted I struggle with the finer points of our beautiful English language. A dear retired English teacher took me under her wing and as Gently as Attila The Hun has helped me to become better, though as she shakes her head and acknowledges I still have a "fur piece to go."

Let Jesus help you along the path, and be willing to step in and help someone else.
