Hustle and bustle all around. Streamers , balloons , beauty in every corner. Come now everybody , lets get going. The buzzing excitement blanketed the rich atmosphere of sound, ,merrymaking and laughter. Tantalising aromas lingered through the halls and the scurry of feet captivated the silent corridors. It’s the grand day of the king’s banquet . Many have been invited . It is sure to be an extravagant day . Spare no cost , said the king. Prepare the best , my honored guests are coming to celebrate my son with me. My eyes gleamed at the majesty of the banquet table rich in splendour .
What is this, picking up an unsent invitation. “Quickly , everyone gather around”, I motioned , “have all the invites been sent , the king will not be pleased should he know that his invitation was not extended to all to attend the banquet.”
Yes , mam , all has been sent but no-one is coming . What , no-one . How is this possible I wondered , as my heart raced with anticipation . I thought all these invited guests loved the king and would be overjoyed to celebrate his son .
Just then the king entered the room. He laid his gentle hand on my shoulder , that’s okay , do as I tell you , ‘The wedding banquet is ready, but those I invited did not deserve to come. Go to the street corners and invite to the banquet anyone you find.’ So, we his servants, went out into the streets and gathered all the people we could find, both good and bad, and the wedding hall was filled with guests.
How many times in our lives the King has extended to us a personal invitation to come , sup at the table of the Lord and we go about our day to day business as if this invite means nothing. It is amazing that the invitation from the King needed to be repeated at all! The invitation of the King is both a great honour and a sovereign command and one does not refuse the King.
Because the ones who were invited refused to come, the king now turns to others. He sends his servants out into the streets to invite all that they could find, whether good or bad. The banquet hall was soon filled with people wanting to have a share in the King’s wedding feast for his Son. The call is not for the wise and the learned, certainly not for the smug and self-righteous, but for all who would come. He came into the world to seek and save that which was lost, not those who had rigorously kept the Law (or who said they did) and could claim to have the righteousness to enter the banquet. What is drawn into the hall are both good and bad people--but all in need of God’s invitation to escape the sin and bondage of this world.
The story makes it clear that there is no reason, none at all, for people to reject a gracious invitation from the King to come to the wedding feast and enjoy all good things. The only reason they reject the invitation is that they do not believe the King, or they do not believe that Jesus is the Son of God. But since this is a call from the King, from God Himself, the people are not free to take it or leave it. To reject the invitation of God to share in the Kingdom is folly--it is to choose death; or, to reject the offer of grace is to reject God’s only provision for eternal life.
Princes and Paupers , sons and daughter , losers and winners , saints and sinners , one day will seek his face.
Many are called , few are chosen, Choose to be chosen. Your name is on the invite , the banquet is ready and the king is waiting . Have you accepted the invitation ?
