Reflections:
- In our verses in 2 Samuel the story of David and Bathsheba uncomfortably reminded us that we are powerless to contain our tendencies towards sin. If we choose to try and control ourselves, if we think we can fix things, we soon realize that we have only made matters worse. It is when we admit that we need God and that it is only His grace and power to forgive and protect us that real change and transformation in our lives can begin.
- In Paul’s prayer for the Ephesians he beseeches that we all come to know the living Christ, present and alive in our hearts. As we learn to feel His presence within our lives, we grow to explore the depth, height, breadth and magnitude of God’s love in ways more abundantly than we could ever imagine.
- In Psalm 14 David laments at the evil that is running rampant in the world. He cries out in pain and hopelessness. But as he cries an inner peace is beginning to develop. He sees rays of sunshine and hope alive in the hearts of those who have turned to God. Righteous people, those closely aligned with God’s will, provide all the hope the world needs for its deliverance from evil and for the salvation of all.
- In the Gospel of John we realize that the story of Jesus feeding the 5000 with just a few loaves of dried bread and a couple of fish is teaching us to rely on God to provide for our every need. His blessings and His grace are sufficient to meet our every need in abundant ways and that we have nothing to fear because of it.
- Are you building God’s kingdom? Are you trying to do it alone? Do you fix things and organize people and scurry around trying desperately to make things right? Where does all that scurrying get you? Do you wear out? Do you crash and burn? Do you suddenly feel abandoned with no where to turn? Have you given in to temptation, indulged in a weakness or fed a habit? Where is God in all of this? Has your self taken over the position of god in your life, pushing away the only source of true healing available?
- Can you feel God’s presence within you? Do you realize that He is always there? Does it amaze you that God, the magnificent creator of the universe takes the time and effort to live within you? That He deeply cares for you and is always ready to answer your prayers, lift your spirit, and guide you into becoming His disciple? Are you able to pray that others will grow to feel His power living within them? Do you have a list of people you lift in prayer every day? Have you seen God’s love at work within those people for whom you pray?
- In your role as a builder of God’s kingdom, are you ever overwhelmed at the amount of work to do or are you frustrated with limited resources with which you have to do it? Have you ever experienced a time where God stretched those limited resources into an amazing success story? Have you grown to understand that He always provides bountifully and that faith is the ability to expect His faithfulness? What fears have you been able to set aside as you have grown to realize that Christ is with you always?
- This week’s verses are asking us to look at how our lives can be changed when we give them over to the power of God and allow Him to lead us into the paths of righteousness. Where have you limited God’s power in your life? What issues have you struggled with that you have not given to Him to resolve? Do you rely on the power of God to help you in your life? Have you seen His power at work in you? Do you turn to God and allow Him to provide for you and to meet your needs?
“Come, Holy Spirit. Fill the hearts of your faithful.” Help us to grow in our understanding and knowledge of you. Show us that you are always there to guide us through the challenges, hurts and ordeals we face in our lives. Keep us from the harm that we bring upon ourselves. Protect us, guide us, lead us, comfort us, strengthen us, and transform us into the disciples you are calling us to be. Give us the ability to always feel your presence so that we can constantly be aware of your plan for our lives. As we learn to rely on your faithfulness, teach us that your grace and the blessings you provide will always be more than sufficient for our needs. We pray this through our great teacher, Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen.
