Larry Lilly's Letter Tuesday February 13, 2007

I spent some time thinking of a man who had a long list of reasons for his current failure, none of which by the way are valid. He has 'been through it' to be sure, but so have thousands upon thousands of others. He told an attorney that one of the reasons he could not hold a job is due to the fact of his being divorced. He is a 'minister' of sorts. The attorney told him to get a job in another line of work. Probably good advice in this case.

However.

You knew I was going here didn't you.

However, I know literally hundreds of men who have experienced the same tragedy and who are enjoying the blessings of the Lord on their life and ministry in spite of the bias of many super knowledgeable pontiffs. If you want to add to the number by including past saints who endured this thorn, those who have passed on and left a trail of outstanding achievement in the Lord's work the numbers are legion. In the mentioned case, each group who hired him knew of his 'past' and his past was not the reason for his dismissal but rather his present rotten attitude. Over the years I hired and served successfully with several men who had some kind of past, yet their present attitude and demonstration of the Christian life was in every sense exemplary.

I took the above extreme example because I know it to be one of the most explosive in Bible believing circles and if this excuse for failure can be shown to be just that, an excuse, than many folks with lesser burdens to bear can throw off self pity and fly with the eagles.

Zig Ziglar, a top salesman and former president of the Southern Baptist Convention, of which I am NOT a member, but to be president of about anything is an honorable achievement, made a statement that will keep you going on a cold dark night:

"Others can stop you temporarily, you are the only one who can stop you permanently."

Can it be that we are own worst enemy? Is Pogo right when he stated, "We have found the enemy and he is us? "Could be. One thing is for certain if you think you're going to fail you are most likely right.

My friend, Jesus, said, in Matthew 9:29, "According to your faith be it unto you.

In the passage Jesus healed blind men. He touched them. If life is getting you down due to some unacceptable problem, (Blindness was horrible in the ancient world) bring your fault to Jesus, He will touch you and send you on. I'm sure the blind men encountered some who complained, "They USED to be blind." They kept right on seeing and so can you as a result of his touch.
