Poetry
Three men in my life told me they loved me, but I believed only one.
The first man came to me and said, “I love you. I will buy you jewels and precious treasures. I will make you the most coveted woman in the world. And if it came to it, I would die for you.”
I looked at him. “You do not love me,” I said; and he left.
The second man came to me and said, “I love you. I will provide you with everything you would ever desire. I will clothe you in the finest clothes and build a mansion for you. And if it came to it, I would die for you.”
I looked at him. “You do not love me,” I said; and he left.
The third man came to me and said, “I love you. I am not rich and I probably never will be. I do not have many possessions and do not own many things. But I will promise you this: we will go through many struggles and many troubles will come up against us. There will be many times when we will want to die. But in those times, in the deepest of valleys, I will give you my hand. I will not die and leave you alone—-I will live for you.”
I looked at him. “I love you, too.”
I took his hand and we’ve been inseparable ever since.

Dallas, I thought this was absolutely beautiful. Short, simple, but very special. I loved the way you brought it to a conclusion. Really lovely. My only comment would be that using contractions in the speech would make it a little more natural to read, i.e., "You don't love me" rather than "You do not love me." Although, having said that, because of the style of the piece, you can actually get away with it being in the more formal way you've written it. So the contractions are just a suggestion. Other than that, I thought it was delightful and quite heart warming. With love, Deb
