Larry Lilly's Letter Monday January 22, 2007

In spite of 45 years of walking with Jesus and studying the Bible, I find that I am still amazed at how much good common sense the Bible gives to apply to our daily lives. I got to thinking about this again just this early morning, (Sat) while browsing through some emails sent to me by different folks who help me by sending interesting quotes and ideas that often trigger my mind into action. Keep in mind that something to 'trigger' this old gray must be powerful, as the brain has progressed from Limbaugh’s 'oatmeal' to pure concrete.

Over the years when I have sensed or known that I was hemmed in, with trouble and unassailable obstacles, I have often set to worrying. Yet when I read the scriptures I find that such a revolting situation was part and parcel of the men and women in the grand accounts of faith and courage. Moses at the Red Sea has kept me going and many is the time, I have identified with David. I love the story of Samson overcoming hosts of Philistines, and I weep when I see him enter the subterranean caves of infamy wrapped in the tender, enticing arms of Delilah. Yet, God moved in each Hero's life and you know the rest of the story.

So, the next time you are surrounded, and I certainly hope you do not get in Samson's mess with tender arms etc, keep in mind the accounts in God's Word where all appeared lost and trust the Lord to make a way where there is no way. He is very good at this.

Cullen Hightower stated a truth that I try to employ and have been using often during the last 16-17 years of a life filled with trouble, and yes, a certain amount of enormous victory.

"Worry compounds the futility of being trapped on a dead end street. Thinking opens new avenues."

I try to change the statement a little by teaching myself, through reliance on God's Word, to change my prayers from 'Worry Prayers' to 'Thinking Prayers' meaning that instead of praying negatively that 'all is lost' into 'God is making a way where there is no way.' I picked up the phrase "God will/is making a way where there is no way" from a now departed friend who served as a Deacon in the church I have pastored for the last 16 years, Carl Wright. Carl was not what folks considered one of the luminaries of modern Christendom. He was a mail carrier who was delivered from a life of drunkenness by Jesus Christ and went on to raise a grand family and held the respect of those who knew him in the new life given to him by Christ. When surrounded by the apparent invincible, I am learning to leave off the ‘worry prayer’ and getting into the habit of 'thinking prayer', thinking or if you will, believing in my heart that God WILL make a way. He is in the habit of doing this.
