There is glass everywhere and my wrist is throbbing like someone broke it in half. There is a hole in my windshield with a chunk of my hair. I am so out of it and not sure what to do. My roommate Bumby is walking up to the window.
“ What are we going to do Brandi? You can’t leave the scene. You need to go to the hospital.”
“Bumby, leave, call your mom and get out of here. They’re going to take me to jail. I don’t have insurance and that is a violation of my probation. I am going away for a while so just go.”
I light a cigarette and wait for the police. As I pull the cigarette away I notice blood on my hand. I look in the rearview mirror and notice glass on my face and my nose is bleeding profusely.
I’m in the ambulance, the EMT is talking to me.
“Do you know Jesus? ”
“Sir no disrespect, but I have known Jesus since I was thirteen and look at my life.”
“I’m going to pray for you, Jesus will forgive you and not forsake you.”
I am wheeled into the E.R., then to x-ray. My wrist is broken, I will need surgery. They wheel me into a room and start to clean my face. There’s so much glass, they can’t get it all.
The doctor is stitching my face, it’s excruciating.
For some reason the police never come to pick me up. I go home. Bumby is home when I get there.
“Bumby, do you ever wonder why we’re here on earth?”
“Brandi, I’m here to get high! Do you want to smoke up or what?”
While I’m high I look in the mirror. What a shock, my face is mutilated.
“Look at me. Lord, I’ve ruined everything in my life. I don’t want to live this way. Unless you give me a sign I’m going to kill myself.”
“Brandi, the phone’s for you.”
“Hello, it’s Lisa. I was praying and the Lord told me to call you. Would you come to stay with me? I need help here.”
That was my sign. Six years ago God saved my life with a phone call. I’ve served him every day since.
