What is it with we human beings? Why do we insist upon viewing our lives in such a 'grass is greener over there' mentality? Why do we second guess every tiny decision to the point of madness?

Today, I went and did something I've been putting off for two years. Nothing earth shaking. Nothing at all noteable. But for me, it was a 'freeing' sort of act, and I'm glad I did it.

What in the world did she do now, you may be asking. Well, this is it.

I got my hair cut.

Okay, I know, I know. I told you it wasn't anything earth shaking or even noteworthy. But I DID IT FINALLY! And I'm happy I did.

See, I am forty six. My hair was very long and getting to be so aggravating. I pulled it back every day anyway. And I'm short. My hair was just too much all around. So, before I could talk myself out of it (like I've been doing for nearly two years) I made a mad dash to the mall early this morning and walked into the salon and said, "Please, can you just do SOMETHING with this?" Of course they said yes--they are in the business after all.

As always happens when you're getting a haircut, the stylist and I began talking. Her hair was my dream, stick straight, shiny, smooth. In the course of our conversation, she remarked, "Your hair is so beautiful. Thick and with so much natural curl! I wish I had hair like yours!"

Um, what? I was thinking. All my life I've been fighting my hair. All my life I've hated my hair because of it's natural curliness, thickness, complete unmanageability. I've probably bought every straightening product known to man at some point in my life. Still, the fact is, I wasn't meant to have straight hair, either naturally or man-made.

The end result of my morning is a haircut that works with what God gave me. Curly, up to my shoulders, and most important of all, this 'do' requires next to no effort on my part, which is excellent because I'm not a hair person. I just don't care that much and will NEVER stand in front of any mirror trying to get it to look just so.

Is your life like this? Are you trying so hard to achieve something that you know deep down is just not in the cards for you?

We have to be people who can accept what God had planned for us. We have to accept ourselves as we are--He deliberately made us the way we are.
Stop fighting Him. If He gave you curly hair, or straight hair, or crooked teeth, accept them as a gift. You are unique for a reason. Forget plastic surgery. Forget blowing all your money on stuff that promises to give you what you don't have and aren't meant to have.

God makes no mistakes. Not with your life and never with you personally. Trust Him right down to the tiniest details, like your hair, and just watch what He can do.

You're special. And I didn't say that. God did! (Although I think you all are pretty special too!)

Dear Elizabeth, I certainly enjoyed reading this article! I had to chuckle because I am a retired hair-dresser, so I could just see you in that chair! :^) I especially liked what you said about our own unique personalities.
Great writing! Thank you, Sister in Christ, Jacque
