Can You Hear the Rumble?

I was working without thought to the noise, until I stepped outside of the work zone and I realized the rumble was missing! It was so quiet something seemed wrong, almost as if I was off balance! Later that evening when I got home I turned off all the noises, anything that might ding or buzz was silenced, and I basked in the quiet!

I allowed my mind to roam through this territory of silence and began to contemplate how easily we become accustomed to the racket around us! The noise at work had become normal, so much that when I stepped outside of it I felt strange! Something wasn’t right! Yet, it was so right!

Let’s look at some of the scriptures provided about quietness:

Surely I have behaved and quieted myself, as a child that is weaned of his mother: my soul is even as a weaned child. Psalms 131:2

When he giveth quietness, who then can make trouble? And when he hideth his face, who then can behold him? Whether it be done against a nation, or against a man only: Job 34:29

And the work of righteousness shall be peace; and the effect of righteousness quietness and assurance for ever. Isaiah 32:17

And that ye study to be quiet, and to do your own business, and to work with your own hands, as we commanded you. I Thessalonians 4:11

Now them that are such we command and exhort by our Lord Jesus Christ, that with quietness they work, and eat their own bread. 2 Thessalonians 3:12

It is in the quietness that we become still and are able to hear what the Lord is saying! It was commanded in Numbers 9:8: And Moses said unto them, Stand still, and I will hear what the LORD will command concerning you. Yet, we find it almost debilitating to enter into quiet and stillness!

When we enter our prayer closet and shut out the racket around us, our minds will race with things we need to do, and people we need to call! Inevitably the phone will ring or the children will knock on the door; nevertheless it is vital that we step outside of the rumble and still ourselves before the Lord.

Many may ask, does that mean I quit my job and silence myself away inside my home? The answer is no, UNLESS God has spoken for you to do this! But I believe it is necessary for us to find quiet time and also to recognize the noise for what it is – a distraction of gigantic proportions.

When the noise becomes normal, we need to take a step back! Being quiet takes practice! It will not be easy at first, but once you grasp the concept and find that time during your day to bask in the silence, you might just find that it is there, in the stillness that Jesus is waiting!

Jehovah God Almighty, King David understood the necessity of being still when he penned the words, Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth. Lord, help us today to recognize the noise; let the rumble become clear so that we can see the importance of stillness and quietness sometime in our day! We know it is when we shut out the rumble that we can hear your still small voice! It is when we make an effort to turn off the static that we are able to still ourselves! Help us Lord, we pray!
